Freelancer vs Studio: 3D Animation Cost
For a focused 3D product animation, a senior freelancer is usually about half the price of a studio for the same craft work. A studio is the better choice when the volume is too big for one person by your deadline, or when you need live action, strategy or media in the same contract. The calculator below shows cost and calendar time for both as ranges. No signup, and every assumption is open and editable.

A freelancer is the better fit for this job.
At the middle estimate the freelancer is about 58% cheaper, with the same craft work behind it.
Senior freelancer
EUR 7,400 to EUR 23,000
Studio or agency
EUR 15,200 to EUR 56,000
About 22 artist days of craft work (range 14 to 30). The white tick marks the middle of each range. Middle: freelancer EUR 15,100, studio EUR 35,500. Estimates, not quotes.
Freelancer, calendar time
4 wk to 7.5 wk
Studio, calendar time
5.5 wk
Your deadline: 8 weeks. A team works in parallel but adds kickoff and approval steps.
Why this answer
- Points to a freelancer: The scope fits one senior artist and your deadline. You pay for craft, not for a management layer you do not need.
- Points to a freelancer: With a few feedback rounds, talking directly to the person making the work keeps each round short.
What each route includes
Senior freelancer
- One senior artist who builds, animates, lights and renders
- Direct contact, feedback answered in hours
- Project management is part of the day rate, kept light
- Fixed scope in writing, approvals on cheap stages first
Studio or agency
- Producer, art direction and a team working in parallel
- Account layer, documentation and a bench for sick days
- Fits procurement rules that require a company contract
- Can combine 3D with live action, sound, strategy and media

Request a projectHow much does a freelance 3D animator cost compared with a studio?
The craft work is the same: building the model, animating, lighting, rendering and compositing. What differs is the price of a day and the layer around it. My day rate is 500 to 700 EUR and covers software, render machines and project management. A studio day rate is higher because it also pays for producers, facilities and people on the bench, and the project usually carries a management share on top. The studio values in the calculator are my own estimates, not quotes.
What does a studio include that a freelancer does not?
Parallel capacity, a producer who runs the schedule, an account layer, documentation and a replacement if someone is ill. That has real value on a large or multi-discipline job. For one named person who owns the frame, it is overhead. The longer comparison is in freelance 3D artist vs animation studio.
When should I hire a studio instead of a freelancer?
When the work does not fit one person before your deadline, when 3D is only one part of a campaign that also needs a shoot, strategy or media buying, or when procurement requires a company contract. The calculator checks the first condition against your deadline and asks you about the second. I am often the 3D part inside such a team, see freelance 3D artist.
How long does a 3D product animation take?
A single medium product at 30 seconds is a matter of weeks for one artist, mostly the model and the animation, with feedback rounds adding waiting time. More products and versions scale the work, which is why the bars show a range. For what a clip includes, read 3D product animation and the breakdown of CGI commercial cost drivers.
How does the calculator estimate the ranges?
It first estimates artist days: model and look development per product, animation per ten seconds, extra days per version and a share for each feedback round. Both routes use the same days. The freelancer route multiplies by a day rate of 500 to 700 EUR plus a small overhead. The studio route multiplies by an estimated studio day rate and adds a management share and a contingency share. Calendar time divides the days by one person for the freelancer and by a small team at 70 percent efficiency for the studio, plus kickoff and approval waiting. The low end of each range uses all low values, the high end all high values. If you are comparing CGI with a photo shoot instead, use the CGI vs product photography cost calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Is a freelancer cheaper than a studio for 3D animation?
Usually yes, for the same craft work. A senior freelancer charges 500 to 700 EUR per day and carries little overhead. A studio day rate also pays for producers, facilities and a bench, and the project adds a management share on top. The calculator shows both as ranges for your job.
When is a studio the better choice?
When the volume is too big for one person by your deadline, when you need live action, strategy, sound or media under one contract, or when procurement requires a company with redundancy. In those cases a studio earns its higher price.
Are the studio prices real quotes?
No. They are my own market estimates, set as editable defaults and labelled as such. Studios differ a lot. Replace them with offers you have received and the result updates.
What does a freelancer day rate cover?
The artist's time, software, render machines and project management. Nothing else sits in the rate, which is why it is lower than a studio day rate that also carries a producer and facilities.
Is a studio faster than a freelancer?
On large jobs, yes, because several artists work in parallel. On small jobs, not necessarily: a studio adds kickoff and approval steps, and one artist can start immediately. The calendar bars in the calculator show both for your numbers.
What does the calculator leave out?
Music and sound, voice over, live action, usage rights, rush surcharges, translation and your own approval time. It compares the two routes for the 3D work, it does not budget a campaign.
