2D vs 3D Animation: Which One Should You Use?
Use 2D animation when the idea is graphic, when the message is explanation rather than object, and when the film is made once and never varied. Use 3D animation when a physical product has to be seen from every angle, when materials, light or physics carry the message, or when one build has to feed many shots, formats and campaigns. The real difference is not how it looks, it is what a change costs you after approval, and how much of the work survives into the next project.

What actually separates 2D from 3D animation?
2D animation moves artwork on a flat plane. Every angle you see was drawn to be seen from that angle, so a different view is new artwork. 3D animation builds objects inside a virtual space with depth, then points a camera at them. A different view is a camera move.
That is the entire technical difference, and every practical consequence comes out of it. Cost, schedule, how you handle changes, how many formats you get, whether a second campaign starts from zero. Style is not the difference. A 3D film can look flat and graphic, and a 2D film can look rich and detailed. The question worth asking is not which one looks better, it is which one your project can afford to change.
How do the two compare on what matters to a buyer?

When is 2D animation the right call?
- The subject is an idea, not an object. Processes, services, software, comparisons. Flat graphics explain relationships faster than a rendered room.
- The film is made once. One format, one length, no variants, no sequel.
- The style is the point. An illustrated look with a distinct hand is a brand asset in itself, and faking it in 3D costs more than drawing it.
- Type and information carry the message. Text, charts and diagrams live naturally in 2D.
- You need something on screen quickly and the budget is fixed. 2D gets to a watchable first version with less scaffolding.
When is 3D animation the right call?
- A physical product is the hero. The viewer has to believe the object, see the material, and watch it turn. Product animation exists for exactly this.
- The product does not exist yet. With CAD or a design file, a product can be animated long before the first physical sample, which no photographic or drawn route can do honestly.
- The behaviour is the message. Cloth falling, fluid moving, a material reacting. On BASF Design Fabrics the whole point was showing how materials behave, which meant simulating them rather than illustrating them.
- You need many versions from one production. Angles, colourways, languages, aspect ratios. Once the scene exists these are re-renders.
- Realism has to hold up on a large screen. The Trainline Tap That App hands ran as digital out of home across major UK stations, at a size where a drawn hand would read as illustration rather than as a hand.
- The asset should outlive the campaign. A product built once can carry the next campaign, the next colourway and the next format at a fraction of the original effort.
Which one is actually cheaper?
Neither, and any answer that names a number without seeing the brief is guessing. The honest version is that the two have different cost shapes.
2D is cheap at the start and gets more expensive per addition. Every new shot, angle and format is new drawing work, so the cost curve rises steadily with scope.
3D is expensive at the start and gets cheaper per addition. The build, look development and lighting are paid once, then extra shots and formats are mostly render time. The curve is steep, then flat.
The crossover comes earlier than most people expect. It is usually not the second film that tips it, it is the fourth format of the first film. What drives the 3D number specifically, scene complexity, simulation, level of realism, number of unique shots and approval layers, is broken down in what drives the cost of a CGI commercial.
Which one handles changes better after approval?
This is the question that decides real projects and almost never appears in the brief.
In 2D, a late change to a character, a colour or a layout means redrawing the frames it touches. The cost depends on how many frames that is.
In 3D, a late change to a material, a colour or a camera is a parameter change followed by a re-render. Machine hours, not creative hours. The exception is a change to the model itself after everything downstream is built, which is genuinely expensive, and it is why nothing here moves forward before the previous stage is approved.
If your approval chain is long, or if the product spec is still moving while production runs, 3D absorbs that better. Procedural setups in particular are built so that a changed input recomputes instead of forcing a rebuild, which is the argument made at length in Houdini vs Blender for commercial VFX.
Can you mix 2D and 3D in the same film?
Yes, and most commercial work already does. The usual split is 3D for anything physical, product, character, environment, and 2D for type, graphic accents, UI layers, transitions and information. The two meet in compositing, which is where a film is assembled anyway.
The mistake to avoid is mixing without a reason. If the 2D layer exists because the 3D looked empty, the film reads as two films. If it exists because information needs to sit on top of a physical scene, it reads as one.
Does the choice change for social and vertical formats?
It changes the economics more than the creative. Social work rarely needs one film, it needs the same idea in 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1, often with different lengths and sometimes different framings per platform.
3D handles that as reframing and re-rendering the same scene. 2D handles it as a layout job per format, because artwork drawn for a wide frame usually has to be rebuilt for a tall one. If your media plan lists more than two formats, that alone moves the balance towards 3D even for a simple idea.
What about character animation, is 2D or 3D better?
Both work, and the decision is about style and reuse rather than capability. 2D characters carry a handmade, illustrated identity that is very hard to reproduce in 3D. 3D characters can be posed from any angle, relit for a new scene and reused across a campaign without redrawing anything.
The middle ground is stylised 3D, which keeps the graphic identity while retaining a real camera and reusable rigs. How do I decide without knowing the craft?
Answer three questions in the brief and the technique usually picks itself.
- Is the thing on screen a real physical object, or an idea? Object points to 3D, idea points to 2D.
- How many versions does this need, counting formats, lengths and languages? One points to 2D, several points to 3D.
- How likely is it that something changes after sign off? Stable points to 2D, moving points to 3D.
If the answers pull in different directions, that is usually a sign the project is a hybrid, or that it is really two deliverables wearing one brief. Both are fine, they just need to be named before production rather than discovered in the middle of it.

Which is better for an explainer video?
2D, usually. Explainers are about concepts, steps and relationships, and flat graphics communicate those faster and cheaper than a rendered world.
Does 3D always look photoreal?
No. Photorealism is a choice and a cost driver, not a property of 3D. A stylised 3D film can be made deliberately simple and still keeps the advantages of a real camera and reusable assets.
What software is used for each?
2D typically runs on After Effects, Toon Boom, Moho or Animate. 3D runs on Houdini, Blender, Cinema 4D or Maya with a renderer such as Redshift, Cycles or Arnold. I work in Houdini with Redshift and composite in Nuke.
Which is harder to learn?
3D has the steeper technical curve because it adds rigging, lighting, simulation and rendering on top of animation. 2D demands more drawing ability. Neither is easy, they are difficult in different places.
Which one is better for social formats?
3D, when you need the same content in 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1. Reframing a 3D scene is a camera change and a re-render. Reframing 2D artwork often means redrawing or relaying out each version.
Do I have to decide before writing the brief?
No, and it is better not to. Write what the film has to do, how many versions it needs, and whether the thing on screen is a real object. The technique usually decides itself from those three answers.
